Gelderland is taking an unusual step to protect its residents. A temporary measure allows the use of paintball guns to fend off a wolf that is no longer afraid of humans. This decision is part of a broader plan to keep the wolf at bay.

Trained professionals will act if the wolf gets too close, firing paint bullets to deter the animal. With an increase in wolf sightings, Gelderland emphasizes the importance of safety guidelines. Citizens are encouraged to remain calm and not approach the wolf if encountered. In case of emergency, they should immediately call the authorities. The temporary permit for the paintball gun is valid for 18 months.

While some support the strategy, conservation groups criticize the use of paintball guns. They suggest alternative methods such as stunning and relocating the wolf. The situation in Gelderland is being closely monitored because of the controversy surrounding this approach.
