During Biodiversity Week, from Wednesday May 22 to Saturday May 25, there is a program with approximately 40 activities in the municipality. Wednesday, May 22 is International Biodiversity Day, an initiative of the United Nations. To show and experience the importance of the diversity of plants and animals, the municipality of Groningen has put together a program about this together with eight nature organizations.

The activities range from excursions to crafts for children. “The deterioration of nature is happening at an unprecedented rate. More and more species are in danger of becoming extinct, with adverse consequences for humans and animals worldwide. Think of our health, food security, economy and quality of life,” says Councilor for Nature & Ecology Kirsten de Wrede. “Changes in the environment, caused by both natural processes and human activities, lead to a reduction in biodiversity. Biodiversity is a complicated word. Giving a helping hand to make nature stronger is not complicated but very simple. Besides the fact that the activities are very interesting, it is also very nice to be involved with nature.”

Program for young and old

Biodiversity Week offers varied activities and connects with other themes, such as food transition, soil as a healthy basis, climate adaptation, greening, heritage and management and maintenance. There are walking and cycling excursions, films and lectures, greening actions and suggestions for your own living environment.

Participation is limited for a number of activities and the rule is: full is full. For more information and registration, visitduurgroningen.nl/biodiversiteit.

Collaboration with nature organizations

The eight nature organizations participating in Biodiversity Week are Landscape Management Groningen, Natuurmonumenten, Het Groninger Landschap, Nature and Environmental Federation Groningen, Staatsbosbeheer, IVN Nature Education, KNNV association for field biology and Avifaua.
