For the past six months you have been able to visit a new business at Oude Boteringestraat 1 in Groningen: Artsy Avenue! This is the place where you can give free rein to your creativity by painting ceramics. “It is experienced as soothing, a kind of therapy.”

Immediately upon entering they welcome you with a smile and ask if you would like something to drink. Already at the opening of the day, the first visitors were ready at the door, eager to start working on their work of art. A coffee mug, plate, teapot and much more is available for visitors to provide with a unique design.

Soothing and fun

The owner is quite creative herself and noticed that painting gives a soothing feeling. “I paint a lot myself and notice that once I’m busy, I don’t look at my phone for two hours. You get away from the online world for a while, and that is nice.” The customers apparently experience it the same way and it is reflected in the number of visitors. “It’s always full here on weekends and you really have to make a reservation to get a spot.”

Not only Groningen residents drop by after they happened to walk past. “People come here all the way from Limburg, from the Randstad and sometimes even from Germany!” And that is not without reason: the concept that Artsy Avenue offers is not something you see much in the Netherlands. “Similar concepts are usually taught in a workshop format, where you start at a fixed time and learn everything. You can also get help here, but above all you get the freedom to get started yourself.”

In addition to the unique concept, the success and growing popularity is also due to the active use of social media. “I would recommend every entrepreneur to use TikTok. If you follow the trends a bit, it can really help your business. After my first video I was fully booked for three months!”

Just the beginning

Business is booming at Artsy Avenue, which has been open for almost six months. So good, in fact, that it doesn’t stop at Groningen. “Today I can pick up the keys to a new building in Amsterdam. There will also be an Artsy Avenue business there.”

When asked whether Amsterdam will be the last city, the owner does not have to think long. “No, Amsterdam will not be the last. But I don’t know yet where I will open the next branch. Maybe in Limburg?”
