An alternative to the Arnesteinkade, at Fundex Equipment

We have often written about the problems with the Middelburg quay walls in the city center, but did you know that there is also a problem with a quay on the edge of the city?

Weight restriction

A month ago, a weight restriction was introduced for the Arnesteinkade, which is located along the Arne Canal. See the questions that were asked about this (and the answers) on the website of the Municipality of Middelburg.

Kouijzer Classic Boats

The measures have consequences for various companies, including Kouijzer Classic Boats of Jesper Kouijzer. The ships that he and his team restored can no longer be launched there. That is very annoying, but fortunately a temporary solution has been found. Jesper has received permission from Fundex Equipment BV to use their part of the quay for launching. It still requires a bit of improvisation, but for now it’s a nice solution.

Batavier

Schokker On Wednesday we drove to the end of the Kleverskerkseweg to watch the launching of the Batavier, a beautifully restored ship. This so-called Schokker, with a sleek paint job, simply sparkled, with the sun shining brightly on that day. We saw that the trip to the quay indeed took a little longer than before, but everything went smoothly. Today the ship, which has undergone approximately 1,500 hours of work, will be delivered to its owner.

We were, just like two years ago, quite impressed again. What a craftsmanship. That mast alone, which would only be hoisted on board later that day: twenty meters long. If you look at it up close you can hardly believe that you are looking at wood.

Work enough

On to the next job. There is still plenty of work. Take that small boat that we saw lying next to the entrance: we would still describe it as a wreck. I bet we will soon dare to call it a gem again?

Come on in, Ancient Mariner:

The ship was cheered, the harbor cleared,
Merrily did we drop
Below the kirk, below the hill,
Below the lighthouse top.

The Sun came up upon the left,
Out of the sea came hey!
And he shined bright, and on the right
Went down into the sea.
