The meadow birds in the Netherlands are not doing well. The numbers have continued to decline since the 1970s. For a long time, the Netherlands had ideal conditions: open landscapes, flowery meadows with insects for the chicks and marshy grasslands. The grasslands have now been transformed into tight, well-drained grass plains.

by Danielle Nooijen

The godwit returns to the Netherlands every spring. However, their numbers are becoming increasingly smaller because, like other meadow birds, they are victims of increasingly intensive agriculture. The nursery of this iconic meadow bird is under pressure. Fast-growing protein-rich grass for cows with few insects for the chicks and too low a water level leads to more birds dying than being born. Moreover, mowing is done before the chicks can fly. There are still some meadow bird areas in the Netherlands that are well protected. The documentary ‘You can’t milk birds’, which can be seen in the Verkadefabriek on May 26 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, focuses on the dilemma between production landscape and meadow bird management of a dairy farmer from Friesland. Afterwards there will be a Q&A with the documentary maker.
