Nowhere in North Brabant were relatively as many houses empty on January 1 as in Zundert. There were 340, or 3.4 percent of the total housing stock, according to preliminary figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics.
For comparison: in the Netherlands as a whole, 2.3 percent of all houses were empty at the beginning of this year, and in the whole of North Brabant the vacancy rate was 2.1 percent. All these figures are of course a snapshot.
Of all buildings in Zundert, including non-residential properties, 3.8 percent were vacant at the beginning of the year. That is more than the average in the Netherlands, and also more than the average in North Brabant.

Nationally, the number of vacant homes, as well as the total number of vacant buildings, is declining again after a sharp increase in 2022. A total of 36 million square meters is vacant, which is an area almost as large as the entire municipality of Valkenburg. The bulk of that empty space — more than 20 million square feet — is residential space.
The vacant living space in Zundert amounts to 49,370 square meters, of the 66,660 vacant square meters in total. When determining vacancy rates, CBS does not look at small spaces, such as garages, nor at holiday homes, train stations, prisons and other places that are not intended for (permanent) use. A space is vacant if no one lived there on January 1 of this year, no company was established and if no user is listed in the WOZ register.
