Of the 34,410 homes in Almelo, 940 were empty at the beginning of this year, according to provisional figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics. That is 2.7 percent of the total housing stock: more than average in the Netherlands, and also more than average in Overijssel.
Of all buildings in Almelo, 1,090 were vacant at the beginning of this year, or 3.0 percent of the total. Nationally, the number of vacant buildings is approximately the same, but there are fewer vacant buildings throughout Overijssel than here: 2.4 percent. All these figures are of course a snapshot.

Nationally, the number of vacant houses, as well as the total number of vacant properties, is declining again after a sharp increase in 2022. A total of 36 million square meters is vacant, which is an area almost as large as the entire municipality of Valkenburg. The bulk of that empty space — more than 20 million square feet — is residential space.
The vacant living space in Almelo amounts to 104,370 square meters, of the 177,420 vacant square meters in total. When determining vacancy rates, CBS does not look at small spaces, such as garages, nor at holiday homes, train stations, prisons and other places that are not intended for (permanent) use. A space is vacant if no one lived there on January 1 of this year, no company was established and if no user is listed in the WOZ register.
