Of the 111,860 houses in Eindhoven, 3,200 were empty at the beginning of this year, according to preliminary figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics. That is 2.9 percent of the total housing stock: more than average in the Netherlands, and also more than average in North Brabant.

Of all buildings in Eindhoven, 3,740 were empty at the beginning of this year, or 3.1 percent of the total. Nationally, the number of vacant properties is lower, at 2.5 percent, and there are also fewer vacant properties in North Brabant as a whole than here: 2.4 percent. All these figures are of course a snapshot.

Nationally, the number of vacant homes, as well as the total number of vacant properties, is declining again in 2022 after a sharp increase. A total of 36 million square meters is vacant, which is an area almost as large as the entire municipality of Valkenburg. The bulk of that empty space — more than 20 million square feet — is residential space.

The vacant living space in Eindhoven amounts to 310,910 square meters, of the 554,250 vacant square meters in total. When determining vacancy rates, CBS does not look at small spaces, such as garages, nor at holiday homes, train stations, prisons and other places that are not intended for (permanent) use. A space is vacant if no one lived there on January 1 of this year, no company was established and if no user is listed in the WOZ register.
