A 64-year-old man who drove a scooter on Maassluisstraat in Nieuw-West was tasered by an officer this afternoon. The man was armed with a knife and wouldn’t stop.
A video of a local resident shows that he is being chased by four police officers. According to a police spokesman, enforcers had reported to the police that the man was in his underpants and was carrying a knife.
“Colleagues tried to get the situation under control so that there was no longer any danger,” said the spokesman. One of them used pepper spray, but it still wouldn’t stop. “When that didn’t have enough effect, they decided to create a safe situation by tasing him. Someone is in a scooter, has a knife and is waving it around. That could be very dangerous.”
The man was then handcuffed to the ground. He was eventually taken by officers in a police van to the police station. According to the police spokesperson, he will later be handed over to healthcare personnel and assessed psychiatrically.
The scooter, which previously had taser hooks in it, was taken away by a police tow truck.
