Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro “hid” in the Hungarian embassy in Brasilia for two days last month. That reports The New York Times.
Bolsonaro is said to have stayed in the embassy between February 12 and 14. That was shortly after two former advisers of the former president were arrested and he had to surrender his passport in connection with an investigation into a possible attempted coup.
A lawyer for 69-year-old Bolsonaro confirmed his stay in the Hungarian embassy after the American newspaper published security images. The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has asked the Hungarian ambassador to the country for clarification.
According to Bolsonaro’s lawyer, there was no “hiding”. The former president was said to have been in the Hungarian embassy “to receive updates on the political landscape of both countries”.
Reuters writes that Bolsonaro’s stay raises questions, because it would not be possible to arrest him while staying in a foreign embassy. The Brazilian government has summoned the Hungarian ambassador over the issue.
It is not entirely clear where Bolsonaro is at the moment. But chances are he’s still in Brazil.
Bolsonaro and Orbán have a good relationship
The stay in the embassy suggests according to The New York Times “that Bolsonaro is trying to use his friendship with another far-right leader to circumvent Brazil’s justice system.” Bolsonaro is close to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and called him his “brother” during a visit to the country in 2022.
In 2022, Bolsonaro lost the elections to left-wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Shortly afterwards, his supporters stormed government buildings. An investigation into an alleged coup is underway, but Bolsonaro refuses to testify.
