UN judges demand Israel allows food into Gaza to stop famine | War Israel and Hamas

The UN judges state that conditions in the Gaza Strip are only deteriorating. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) also notes that Palestinians are no longer at risk of famine, but that famine has already struck.

The ruling is in addition to the ICJ’s interim judgment in the lawsuit initiated by South Africa at the end of last year. That country accuses Israel of genocide and has asked the Court to take emergency measures.

For example, South Africa wants Israel to end all its military operations in the Gaza Strip, prevent people from becoming displaced and allow humanitarian aid to victims.

The judges ruled in January that Israel must do “everything possible” to prevent genocide in Gaza. According to the ICJ, the country had to immediately take “drastic measures” to improve living conditions in the area.

But according to South Africa and human rights organizations, Israel has not taken any notice of this interim ruling.

UN member states prosecuted by the International Court of Justice must abide by the rulings. This also applies to Israel. But the UN has no means to enforce compliance.

Nevertheless, pressure on Israel is increasing. The UN Security Council on Monday called for an immediate ceasefire during Ramadan. The council also called on Hamas to immediately and unconditionally release all hostages in Gaza.

The US abstained from voting, but also did not use its veto power. This allowed the Security Council to call for a pause in fighting.
