A software company from the Dutch city of Enschede, which created the software for a festival by provider ID&T, allegedly secured a server of its service with the login ‘administrator’ and ‘Welkom01’, a suspect claimed during a lawsuit.

According to the then 27-year-old Amsterdam resident, the company NextSelect had not properly followed security protocols surrounding the email he received when registering for a festival, writes RTV Oost. He then tried to penetrate the server of the Evi service with several login attempts, of which he said ‘administrator’ and ‘Welkom01’ succeeded. NextSelect emphasizes that it has not been hacked.

He could then view and copy data from all visitors and performing artists to his own MacBook. The man confessed, although he did not provide the password to his MacBook. As a result, the claims about the successful burglary cannot be verified.

The Amsterdam native also placed malware on the system, but did not attempt to make money by extorting the company or threatening disclosure. The companies involved, NextSelect and SupportGroup, estimate the damage at approximately 100,000 euros.

The suspect’s statement differs from how the Public Prosecution Service previously described the intrusion into the system. “He did this, among other things, by cracking the user account of an ID&T executive – an administrator with the most far-reaching user rights,” is how the Public Prosecution Service describes the action. The demand against the man is a prison sentence of 20 months, of which 5 months are conditional. The judge will rule on the lawsuit next month.
