Mayor Halsema bans the Extinction Rebellion (XR) demonstration on the A10 on King’s Day. She writes this in a letter to the activists. Previously, the triangle (mayor, police and public prosecutor) called the blockade of the highway on King’s Day irresponsible and demonstrators were asked to reconsider their action.

According to the triangle, the demonstration was only announced four days before King’s Day, while such an action requires a lot of preparation.

That day is also ‘possibly the busiest of the year’ for the city and the emergency services, with around 100,000 visitors expected. “Partly for this reason, the triangle has urgently appealed to XR to refrain from the blockade on this day,” the letter reads.

Insufficient awareness of risks

XR says it attaches importance to the safe conduct of the demonstration and that the emergency services have free access. But according to the municipality, XR cannot specify how they want to do this.

In addition, according to the triangle, the activists have taken ‘unacceptable risks’ during previous demonstrations: “In the opinion of the triangle, this does not demonstrate sufficient awareness of the risks associated with a demonstration on the A10.”

As with previous demonstrations, the triangle offers XR the opportunity to take action on a lawn near the former ING office.

ING

It is the fourth time that XR has tried to block the highway near the former ING office. The actions are mainly aimed at subsidies on fossil fuels and the bank’s financing of the oil and gas sector.

The first blockade of the A10 was on December 30, the second on February 24. An attempt was also made to block the highway on March 30, which failed.
