The average age of those who retired last year was 65 years and 11 months. That is three months older than a year earlier, according to figures from statistics agency CBS.

Last year, 86,000 workers retired. Three quarters of them were 65 years or older. Ten years ago, only 43 percent of those retiring had reached that age. Twenty years ago that was even only 14 percent.

That percentage was so low at the time because there were still early retirement schemes, but these almost completely disappeared after 2006. In addition, the state pension age has been systematically increased in recent years.

For example, in 2020 you received an AOW benefit as soon as you were 66 years and 4 months old. Last year that had already risen to 66 years and 10 months. Since the beginning of this year, that limit has been 67 years. In four years’ time this will increase even further, to 67 years and 3 months.
