Pedro Sánchez remains as Prime Minister of Spain. He decided this after five days of thinking about the future of his political career after accusations against his wife.

After his wife was accused of abusing his position for private interests, Sánchez announced last week that he would resign from his duties. The 52-year-old politician from the socialist party PSOE indicated that he was seriously considering quitting as prime minister.

At a press conference on Monday, Sánchez indicated that he was ready to fight. “I will continue with more vigor,” he said. He also communicated this decision to the Spanish King Felipe VI.

The accusations against his wife were made by the right-wing club Manos Limpias (Clean Hands). The court in Madrid then decided to start an investigation. Sánchez dismissed the accusations as “intimidation by political opponents” as a result of a “continuous intimidation and bullying operation” by the radical right.

Sánchez received support from thousands of supporters this weekend

His decision to continue puts an end to a hectic week in Spanish politics, which gripped the entire country. Thousands of Sánchez’s supporters took to the streets this weekend to express support for their party leader.

The Spanish Prime Minister, who has been in power since 2018, lost the elections for the first time last summer to the center-right PP. Because that party could not form a majority, Sánchez saw an opportunity to remain in power with the support of the Catalan separatists. The alliance with the very controversial separatists in Spain has not made him more popular with the opposition.
