Israel has begun evacuating Rafah in the Gaza Strip. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told reporters on Tuesday that the Israeli army would enter the areas “soon.” That puts pressure on the possible pause in fighting between Israel and Hamas.
In recent days, negotiators have been positive about a possible ceasefire. There is said to be a proposal on the table in which Israeli hostages would be exchanged for Palestinian prisoners. There is also a call for a 40-day break in fighting.
But Netanyahu reiterated on Tuesday that the ground offensive in Rafah will continue regardless. The Israeli army has recently set up tent camps. The armed forces have now begun to evacuate Palestinians there.
Israel views Rafah as Hamas’s last stronghold. Netanyahu is under considerable pressure at home because his government is still unable to free all hostages. In addition, his radical right coalition partners do not want to stop the war against Hamas under any circumstances.
Rafah is the southernmost region of the Gaza Strip, close to the border with Egypt. The area has been bombed many times by Israel in recent months. Israeli airstrikes continued to kill people on Monday.
