Joost Klein has completed his first rehearsal in Malmö. The 26-year-old Frisian was on the stage of the Malmö Arena for the first time with his song Europapa, assisted by influencers Appie Mussa and Stuntkabouter. Next Thursday they will perform the song in the second semi-final.
Limited images of the rehearsal will be released. The organization does describe the act on social media: “Fans of Joost will be happy that his signature dance moves and giant blue shoulder pads have been shipped to Malmö, along with a keyboardist dressed as a fluffy blue and yellow bird.” According to the description, that bird probably embodies both the flag of the European Union and that of Sweden.
An LED wall is also used on stage. Klein’s act is characterized as “a manic visual tour of the song lyrics”. The whole thing is “three minutes of pure dance energy, with Joost flanked on stage by two dancers in white tracksuits.”
Moon landing
Creative director Gover Meit told various media more about the act last week. “It will be a new form of the moon landing. It has never been done before.”
Meit was inspired by two old Eurovision acts. First of all, last year’s festive Finnish entry (Cha-cha-cha from Käärijä). The second is Portugal’s understated winning song from 2017 (Amar Pelos Dois from Sobral).
“I think that is my favorite Eurovision act ever,” said Meit. “How something small can be very big at a festival. We are now trying to add something to it.”
Last year Finland came second with this song:

Klein traveled to Sweden yesterday. Just before departure he said he had practiced a lot, “meditated a lot and airfried” and especially felt like “looking forward to myself”.
All 37 participants are allowed to rehearse twice, the first time for half an hour, the second time for 20 minutes. The second rehearsal is planned for the Dutch act next Friday.
