“I have been very proud to be part of the Dutch handball team for the past twelve years,” she reports through her management.

‘Fire no longer burns’

“This was always with a lot of passion, love and joy for the sport, the team and the fans. After the World Cup in December, the fire no longer burns as it always did. Taking everything into account, I have made the difficult decision to close this chapter definitively. by ending my international career.”

She participated in the Handball World Cup in December, but national coach Per Johansson did not select her for the Olympic qualifying tournament, where the Dutch team secured a ticket for the Paris Games last month.

The goalkeeper made her debut for the Dutch team in 2012. During the 2019 World Cup, Lieder played a hero’s role. In the final against Spain, she made an important save in the final seconds. When she then wanted to put the ball back into play, she was prevented from doing so by a Spanish player. That earned the Dutch team a penalty ball. This was used and the Netherlands became world champions.

152 international matches

In addition to the world title, she won World Cup silver (2015) and bronze (2017) and silver and bronze at the European Championships of 2016 and 2018. She played 152 international matches. She made her return to the Dutch team in 2023 after giving birth to a daughter at the end of 2022.

“I am extremely grateful to everyone who contributed to this special journey that I was able to make with the Dutch handball team,” she says. “It goes without saying that I wish the Dutch handball team much success in the future. I will of course follow them from the sidelines.”

Lieder will not stop as a professional handball player. She still has a contract with BVB Dortmund and will also defend the goal there next year.
