The Amsterdam police has dismissed four employees because they participated in a WhatsApp group in which cross-border and discriminatory texts were shared. Six others from the same group are awaiting a conditional discharge, the eleventh member has been reprimanded.
The employees have two weeks to respond. That is why the proposed penalties are not yet final, the Amsterdam police say. “We do not make decisions about these types of punishment overnight, as they involve severe penalties,” explains Chief of Police Frank Paauw.
The existence of the WhatsApp groups was discovered during two different criminal investigations. The police then launched disciplinary investigations into the groups to clarify the involvement of the employees.
The sentence follows the advice of the Safety, Integrity and Complaints team of the Amsterdam Unit. That advice was subsequently tested in the National Sentencing Consultation (SMO), in which other units also participate.
Paauw previously stated that he was disappointed in the police officers involved. “It is painful that employees were part of these WhatsApp groups in which matters were shared that were absolutely incompatible with exercising a position in the police. This is at odds with being a police for everyone.”
