Committee mainly sees rain as a reason for half-empty Dam on Remembrance Day | May 4 and 5

Anyone who wanted to attend the National Commemoration on Dam Square this year had to register in advance. There was room for a maximum of 10,000 visitors, but in the end only 4,000 showed up. In previous years, around 20,000 people were allowed on Dam Square.

After the commemoration, there was speculation on social media that people had requested an entrance ticket in protest, but then did not show up. This was also suggested on NUjij. But the National Committee for 4 and 5 May says it has no indications of this.

“We really focus on the weather. We have not received any signals of a possible boycott and assume that the weather has been decisive for people to stay at home,” a spokesperson said.

Visitors were only asked for a first and last name and email address. Based on this information, the organization of the commemoration cannot draw any conclusions about the reasons why more than half of the people with an admission ticket did not show up.

“All admission tickets were sold until the last minute. Cancellations were received, but new reservations were also immediately made.”

Despite the small number of visitors, the National Committee for May 4 and 5 looks back on “a dignified, undisturbed commemoration”. Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema also called it “a worthy commemoration, for survivors, relatives and all other attendees”.
