Residents of five houses in the immediate vicinity of the building in Oss where a fire broke out on Friday morning cannot go home for the time being. It will probably be a few more days before they can return.
The homes have too much smoke damage and there is also a lot of odor nuisance, says a spokesperson for the municipality.
The fire broke out in the night from Thursday to Friday around 4:30 am in the Vice Versa distribution center in the Brabant municipality. This happened in a large cold room where it was -20 degrees.
The extinguishing process will take another two to three days, the municipality reported on Sunday evening. The fire brigade pulled apart the smoldering remains. Because oxygen is then added, new sources of fire arise. Fat from food also fuels the flames.
The fire released a lot of smoke. Furthermore, all kinds of material fell in a large area north of Oss, such as parts of the building and pieces of solar panels. The municipality of Oss advises people to clean up the particles with kitchen gloves, because they can be sharp. It is also recommended to wash your hands afterwards.

After the first extinguishing work, the fire seemed to be under control on Friday morning, but then the fire flared up again. About 250 firefighters were deployed to bring the fire under control. The fire lasted a long time due to the size of the warehouse and because all food was stacked on pallets and in racks several meters high.
Extinguishing the fire also proved difficult. Because the fire extinguishing water froze, it was slippery and it was difficult for emergency services to do their work. The fire brigade ultimately opted for the “burn down scenario”. In such a situation, the fire brigade allows a building to burn out in a controlled manner and ensures that the fire does not spread to adjacent buildings.
