An American teenager was seriously injured after falling into an abandoned missile silo in the state of Colorado. The 18-year-old boy had to spend the night in the shaft before emergency services could rescue him.

The boy had gone to the abandoned military complex with seven friends at night. In the 1960s, intercontinental Titan missiles that could reach Russia with a nuclear warhead were stationed here, but the silos have now been empty for decades.

While exploring the underground structure, the boy fell about 10 meters. According to a police spokesperson, it is a miracle that he survived, because the area is dangerous due to loose chunks of concrete and twisted metal. The owner tries to keep unwanted visitors away with iron gates, but they still crawl through the bent bars.

After the group called the police, it took several hours before the victim could be reached. The emergency services arrived at him around 6:30 am, and it took another two hours before they got him back above ground.

The boy was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Denver. According to doctors, his life is not in danger.

At least one adult from the group of friends will be prosecuted for entering prohibited territory. The six minors have been handed over to their parents and it is still being determined whether they too will be prosecuted. It will later become clear whether the accident has any legal consequences for the victim himself.
