A 72-year-old Dutch man died in an accident in the mountains of northern Italy on Monday. The man fell off a cliff during a mountain hike, Italian media write.
The incident happened on Monday at 4 p.m. in the mountains near the town of Berbenno di Valtellina in Lombardy, the Italian news agency reported. ANSA.
According to Italian media, the 72-year-old man and his son said goodbye to each other at some point during the mountain walk. They would meet again later. But after a while the son reportedly stopped receiving messages from his father, who also did not answer his phone.
ANSA writes that the son saw a body at the bottom of a cliff and called the emergency services. It turned out to be his father. Mayor Valerio Fumasoni contradicts the local media story in conversation with A.D. According to the mayor, father and son were together when the 72-year-old man fell from the cliff.
According to the rescue team, it is certain that the man slipped and fell 100 meters. The team was unable to save the Dutchman after they found him.
“On behalf of the entire community, I extend my condolences to the family who have been so deeply affected,” Fumasoni said in a statement Monday evening.
The 72-year-old Dutchman was on holiday for a few days with his son.
