Former German minister Franziska Giffey was attacked in Berlin on Tuesday. The politician from Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s SPD was attacked from behind in a library. That same day, an unknown politician from Bündnis 90/Die Grünen was also attacked.

Giffey was hit on the head and neck with a bag “with hard contents” and had to be taken to hospital.

A few hours later, two people attacked a 47-year-old female politician from Bündnis 90/Die Grünen in Dresden. According to police, she was putting up posters in the presence of a camera crew. The suspects pushed her, pulled away the posters and spat at her. According to the police, the Hitler salute was also given earlier.

Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner wants a discussion about tougher penalties for attacks on politicians. The interior ministers of the German states have also spoken out in favor of tougher penalties for this type of violence. More politicians have recently been attacked in Germany.

For example, SPD politician Matthias Ecke was seriously injured in an attack on Friday, also in Dresden. The MEP was attacked by four young men. The police assume that the attack came from the political right. Dresden is located in the state of Saxony, where local elections take place in September.

A German teenager has turned himself in after Ecke’s assault. According to the police, it is still unclear who the other three perpetrators are.
