We have had some fun days at our editorial office. 25 years is an anniversary, and an anniversary sometimes makes you a bit nostalgic. In this editorial blog, Lindsay Mossink tells more about our 25th anniversary.
Old photos of young colleagues in former NU.nl sections. Memories of a German NU.nl, the days-long livestream from the Nijmegen Four Days Marches and the night editorship. Conversations about Pim Fortuyn as a columnist, Donald Trump’s election win and our own corona reporting. Our 25th anniversary was a topic of discussion on the editorial floor.
What a shame it would be if these anecdotes did not reach you, I thought this week. Not much later we worked together on a timeline full of successes and blunders. The result is online today.
We have never had a lack of ideas, as this list of memorable moments shows. Many ideas saw the light of day. And we stopped working on some ideas.
Reviving
Just because you stop doing something doesn’t mean you can never revive it. We know all about that.
In 2016 we decided to kill our response platform NUjij.nl, but it didn’t take long before we regretted it. Of course NUjij came back, but under one condition: we make it better than it was. With better moderation, for example – fewer hate comments, more focus on substantive arguments.
I don’t rule out that we will make more old ideas better in the coming years.
In the car with
One section I would rather not have stopped with is In the car with, presented by former NU.nl reporter Chris Helt. Chris made videos in the car with famous Dutch people.
When I called Chris to ask if he wanted to return for a one-off celebration of our 25th anniversary, there was a resounding “yes” on the other end of the line.
And who better to explain all these old initiatives than the former editors-in-chief of NU.nl? So founder Merien ten Houten and former editors-in-chief Laurens Verhagen and Gert-Jaap Hoekman joined Chris and me.

Of In the car with Chris gave NU.nl the face for years. An important goal for us. You show that real people work at NU.nl – with expertise, too. I am convinced that greater visibility of our expertise contributes to the trust you have in us.
I hope you already saw that this year when we sent our reporters to Ukraine. Our first trip to a war zone, where we reported through trial and error. Editorial directors Frank Brinkhuis and Kim Einder recorded the trip. That has become a very honest document, from which we have made three podcast episodes.
It shows where we are now. And we would be happy to discuss this further with you. In October we organize our very first visitors day. We will share more about that soon. Follow this tag for that and don’t miss anything:
