Russia is trying to cross the border into the Ukrainian region of Kharkiv, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reported on Friday. The ministry has sent reinforcements to the region. The city of Vovchansk was also bombed.

Two people were killed in the bombings and the ground offensive. Five others were injured, a local official said.

The Russian army tried to cross the border with armored vehicles on Friday, the governor of the Kharkiv region said.

Due to the bombing of Vovchansk, many have left the area. According to a local official, most fled the village by private transport. People without a car receive help from the authorities.

Ukraine says it has repulsed attack

Governor Oleh Syniehubov reports on social media that the attacks have been repelled. The Ukrainian armed forces are said to have given up “not an inch”.

According to the governor, the Russians do not have the resources to carry out an attack on the city of Kharkiv and the attacks should be seen as a provocation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said at a news conference that his forces were also able to repel Russian ground attacks in the region. But a Ukrainian military source reports to news agency Reuters that the Russian army has already crossed the border.

Number of attacks on eastern Ukraine is increasing

According to the news agency’s source, Moscow wants to create a buffer zone of about 10 kilometers. That is why the number of Russian attacks on eastern Ukraine is increasing.

The British Ministry of Defense reported https://twitter.com/DefenceHQ/status/1788494317717241971 on X that the number of Russian attacks on eastern Ukraine has increased since March. But the Russians are said to have made few territorial gains and suffered heavy losses.

The American think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW) says Russia is increasing the number of attacks on the east to make territorial gains before Ukraine has new weapons and ammunition.

The city of Kharkiv is located a few dozen kilometers from the border with Russia and is therefore a strategic target for the Russians.

Ukraine expelled a large portion of Russian troops from Kharkiv in 2022. In September 2022, Russia formally announced that it had withdrawn from the region. But now Moscow is trying to cross the border there again.
