Several players of the national team of Ecuador were allegedly bribed to lose the opening match of the 2022 World Cup against hosts Qatar on purpose, Bahraini journalist Amjad Taha of the British Middle East Center for Studies and Research reports. This bribe is reportedly worth a total amount of 7.4 million dollars (7.1 million euros).

It is the next scandal to come out about the controversial World Cup in Qatar. Earlier, senior FIFA officials were found to have taken bribes to organize the World Cup in the Asian country and 6,500 workers were found dead during the construction of the stadiums.
