The match between NAC Breda and Willem II in the Kitchen Champion Division was definitively stopped on Friday, because fans threw objects on the field twice. It is the first match in which the new, tightened rules of the KNVB have been applied.

The game in Breda was already stopped halfway through the second half due to a piece of fireworks on the field. Referee Jeroen Manschot sent both teams to the dressing room according to the guidelines. After about ten minutes, the Brabant derby resumed.

Not much later, things went wrong again in the Rat Verlegh Stadium. Willem II opened the score, after which the Tilburgers were pelted by various objects from the audience while cheering. Manschot immediately blew off and gestured that the players had to leave the field again, this time permanently.

The referee thus followed the rules that the KNVB tightened last week after the events in De Kuip at Feyenoord-Ajax. In that game, Ajax player Davy Klaassen was hit with an object from the audience. After a short break, that game was still played.

Consequences still unknown

After Manschot’s decision, most of the audience chanted “shame on you” in the direction of the people who had thrown the objects. The approximately nineteen thousand fans then dejectedly left the stadium.

At the time of the final strike it was 0-1 for Willem II. It is still unknown whether that score is also the final score or whether the game is still being played. The KNVB will have to consider this in the coming days.

At the loaded duel between NAC Breda and Willem II, no fans of the visitors were welcome at the request of the mayors of Breda and Tilburg. Earlier this year, supporters of NAC were also not allowed to come to Tilburg.
