The police in Rome brought Feyenoord fans to safety on Wednesday evening after they were attacked by AS Roma supporters at a catering facility near the Colosseum. The Rotterdam police confirmed this on Thursday after reporting by Italian media.

“The Roma supporters wanted to attack the Feyenoord fans,” says a police spokesperson. “There were some disturbances, provoked by the Roma supporters. The police in Rome ensured that Feyenoord fans could safely return to their hotel by bus.”

Reportedly, about 200 Roma fans confronted the 100 to 150 supporters of Feyenoord. Fans of the Rotterdam club are not welcome on Thursday evening for safety reasons at the return in the quarterfinals of the Europa League against Roma.

Nevertheless, hundreds of Feyenoord supporters have traveled to the Italian capital. Fearing new disturbances, Italian police have deployed 1,500 officers to maintain order. The Italian authorities are assisted by a delegation from the Rotterdam police.

In February 2015, Feyenoord supporters misbehaved in the center of Rome prior to the Europa League match against Roma. Fans damaged, among other things, the famous Barcaccia fountain. The riots caused a lot of commotion in Italy and the Netherlands.

The duel between Roma and Feyenoord starts on Thursday at 9 p.m. and is led by the English referee Anthony Taylor. The team of coach Arne Slot won the first leg 1-0 in De Kuip last week.
