Laura Delava, the reigning Belgian powerlifting champion in the sub-juniors in the class up to 69 kilos, died on Monday at the age of eighteen. Her loved ones announced the sad news on social media. Delava was stricken with a very severe infection, which killed her within 24 hours.

The teenager from Huy had only been active in weightlifting since last summer. At the Belgian championship in Lebbeke in September, she immediately became national champion in her category with four national records.

A friend of Delava shared the death with a very emotional message on Instagram. Her close ones will always remember her humor, her determination, her willpower and her strength of character. I know Laura wanted to give you all wonderful memories. She had the opportunity to change my life in many ways and I am very grateful to her for that. I think she can rest a bit now. We all love you, my Laura,” the friend writes.

This Monday, April 24, 2023, hope was extinguished at 1 p.m. when the doctor came to announce Laura’s irreparable condition. It is therefore with a broken heart that I announce the passing of our national sunshine Laura Delava,” the powerlifting star’s girlfriend began in her message.
