FC Utrecht strengthened itself on Thursday with defender Siebe Horemans. The 25-year-old Belgian comes on a free transfer from relegation candidate Excelsior after the season and has signed a contract for three seasons.

Horemans has been playing for Excelsior since the summer of 2018. The right back made 188 appearances for the Rotterdam team, with which he was promoted to the Eredivisie in 2022. This season he played 26 Eredivisie matches, scoring three times and providing three assists.

“With Siebe we are bringing in a right back who exudes calm and has good passing. At Excelsior he has shown that he has added value both defensively and offensively,” says technical director Jordy Zuidam on the Utrecht club’s website.

Horemans is still involved in a fierce relegation battle with Excelsior this season. The Kralingers have not won since January 19 and are only above the relegation zone on goal difference.

The move to FC Utrecht is therefore a step up for Horemans. Coach Ron Jans’ team is eighth and has good credentials to reach the play-offs for European football.

FC Utrecht previously secured the arrival of transfer-free Alonzo Engwanda from Anderlecht’s promises.
