His assistant in Manchester, Mitchell van der Gaag, would be well received by policymakers in Amsterdam, the weekly reported. The decision on how to fill the position of head coach will rest with general manager Alex Kroes, who took office in the middle of this month, but: “It is crucial that it becomes a broadly supported decision, in which Danny Blind and Louis van Gaal (commissioner and advisor respectively) , ed.) can agree with.”

Other names doing the rounds are that of Pepijn Lijnders, who has worked as Jürgen Klopp’s assistant at the English top club Liverpool in recent years, but will leave next summer in the wake of the popular German. Pascal Jansen, who was fired from AZ earlier this season, is also seen as a candidate and has recently been spotted several times in the stands of the Johan Cruijff ArenA at Ajax home games.
