Sandro Tonali must fear a longer suspension for illegal gambling practices. The English Football Association (FA) suspects the 23-year-old Newcastle United player of having broken gambling rules fifty times. Tonali is already serving a ten-month ban from the Italian Football Federation.

Tonali is suspected in England of having placed fifty bets on sports matches between August 12 and October 12, 2023, the FA announced on Thursday afternoon. At that time, Tonali was already a Newcastle United player. That club paid around 63 million euros for Tonali to AC Milan last summer.

As a player for the Milanese club, Tonali already made a mistake. Last October, he was suspended for ten months by the Italian Football Association for placing sports bets, including on his own team. The Italian admitted to struggling with a gambling addiction and was treated for it.

Newcastle say Tonali is fully cooperating with the new investigation into him. “And we remain fully behind him,” Newcastle writes on its site. Tonali has until April 5 to respond to the allegations.

Due to his suspension, Tonali has not played any matches for months and will miss the remainder of the entire Premier League season. He also has to miss the European Championship with Italy next summer.
