Feyenoord striker expects to recover in time for the cup final against NEC on Sunday, April 21. The Rotterdam summer signing was injured in the semi-final against KNVB Beker at the end of last month and there were fears of a long absence, but he made his return to the training field on Wednesday and is therefore hopeful that he can return to action soon.

Feyenoord paid six million euros last summer for the arrival of Stengs, who did not need much time to prove that he was a serious reinforcement for coach Arne Slot’s formation. Stengs quickly became important with goals and assists and thus also came into the spotlight of the Dutch national team. With a hat-trick in the away match against Gibraltar, the left-footed made an excellent return to the Dutch team in November, but there was no follow-up (yet). A knee injury sustained in the semi-final of the KNVB Cup against FC Groningen has kept him sidelined for a month now.

But his return is imminent. Feyenoord already shared photos of Stengs on the training field on Wednesday and in front of the camera ESPN he confirms that he is on his way back. “It’s going well, it’s going well,” says the former AZ, OGC Nice and Antwerp FC player. He is then asked when he can be admired within the lines again. “I don’t dare say that yet. I’m training now, I think you can see that too. But I don’t know exactly when I can play a match again.” When asked whether he will make it to the cup final, Stengs says promisingly: “I think so.”

Stengs has made 34 appearances for Feyenoord this season, scoring seven goals and fourteen assists. The Rotterdam team will resume the competition next Sunday with a home match against FC Utrecht.
