Relief within the INEOS Grenadiers camp: Tom Pidcock is unlikely to have suffered any serious injuries from his crash in the reconnaissance of the time trial of the Tour of the Basque Country.

Tom Pidcock had to withdraw from the Tour of the Basque Country at the very last minute. The Briton crashed during the reconnaissance of the opening time trial in and around Irun and was subsequently transferred to hospital, but all in all the damage seems not to be too bad.

Fall by gust of wind
“I would like to thank everyone for the messages,” Pidcock said in a video message, which was shared by his team via social media. “Unfortunately I couldn’t start in the Tour of the Basque Country after a fall during reconnaissance. I was surprised by a gust of wind.”

“Scans have not revealed any fractures, but we will have to wait and see in the coming days. I don’t feel so good right now.” The Briton has a lot of problems with his hip. “It was hit hard. I can hardly lean on it now. I am now going home, where I will focus on my recovery.”

The question is whether Pidcock can still prepare in time for the hill classics, with the Amstel Gold Race (April 14), Flèche Wallonne (April 17) and Liège-Bastogne-Liège (April 21). The Brit had set his sights on these competitions.
