FC Twente attacker Liz Rijsbergen suffered a serious knee injury in the away match against FC Utrecht on Sunday afternoon. She will be out of action for a long time, her club reports.

Her injury means that she will have to witness the possible national championship of Twente from the sidelines. She had hoped to win that title on Sunday by beating FC Utrecht, but FC Twente drew 2-2.

‘Nightmare reality’

The 22-year-old player suffered the injury in the first half and had to leave after eleven minutes.

“The day that was supposed to end in tears of joy, ended in tears of sadness. The nightmare has become reality. I am devastated, but I will come back much stronger,” Rijsbergen wrote on Instagram.

The next chance for the national championship is Thursday, when the match between Ajax and AZ resumes. That match was stopped at 0-0 on Saturday after a serious collision by AZ goalkeeper Femke Liefting. If Ajax loses points there, Twente will be champions.

If Ajax beats AZ, Twente can finish it off on Wednesday, May 1, when they visit Fortuna Sittard.
