Vitesse wants to attract John van den Brom as a new trainer. After the historic relegation, the Arnhem team hope to emerge from the Kitchen Champion Division with the club icon at the helm, even though there are still major concerns about its survival.

Van den Brom said in the television program on Monday evening Veronica Offside that he is in discussions with Vitesse about a return. The 57-year-old from Amersfoort was already coach of the Arnhem team in the 2011/2012 season, for which he played no fewer than 378 games as a midfielder.

Interim director Edwin Reijntjes confirmed at a press conference on Wednesday that Vitesse would like to sign Van den Brom. It is already clear that current coach Edward Sturing will step down as ultimately responsible after this season.

“John is a club man,” Reijntjes explained the interest in Van den Brom, who has been without a club since his dismissal from Polish side Lech Poznan in December. “It would be nice if he returns to this club. That there is at least something positive to report.”

Van den Brom received a first offer from Vitesse on Tuesday evening. He is still considering that. “I have clearly indicated the perspectives,” said Reijntjes. “We can make an offer, but it could be that there will no longer be a club in three weeks.”

‘Playing for promotion would be a miracle’

After the historic deduction of eighteen points and the relegation from the Eredivisie, the question is still whether Vitesse will continue to exist. The club is experiencing major financial problems and has until June 15 to submit a balanced budget to the KNVB licensing committee.

In the meantime, the committee can still take away Vitesse’s professional license due to possible violations, although it is not known what these would be. In any case, Vitesse will make major cuts to keep their heads above water next season.

The budget will be reduced from 26 million euros to 13 million euros, of which ‘only’ 4 million euros can be spent on the main force. The big question is whether Vitesse can immediately go for promotion to the Eredivisie with that budget.

Van den Brom said against on Wednesday the Gelderlander that he will only join Vitesse if the club can compete for promotion. That statement surprised Reijntjes. “It would be a miracle if we were promoted right away.”

Yet the director remains hopeful about the arrival of Van den Brom. “In the past there have also been clubs like FC Twente that were able to create a good team with very little money thanks to good scouting. That is what we are going for.”
