NS stops all trains for two minutes at 8 p.m. City transport companies stop trams, buses and metros and air traffic also takes the National Remembrance Day into account. Road users are advised to look for a parking space.

Stopping on the hard shoulder to participate in the two minutes of silence is very unsafe, Rijkswaterstaat emphasizes.

Driving off and merging onto the highway from the hard shoulder is especially dangerous, because other traffic is driving at full speed. In addition, the emergency lane must remain available for emergencies and emergency services.

On Friday and Saturday, the electronic signs above and along the highway will display the text “Safe commemoration? Look for a P, not on the emergency lane!”. Rijkswaterstaat does this at the request of the National Committee 4 and 5 May.

Adjusted rules in the air, public transport stands still for two minutes

Airplanes at Dutch airports are not allowed to depart between 7:50 PM and 8:03 PM. Aircraft that cannot land before 8 p.m. will postpone until 8:03 p.m. or later and wait in the air in the meantime. Restrictions are also in place above various commemorations in the country and aircraft are not allowed to fly below a certain height, says Air Traffic Control the Netherlands.

In Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague, among others, city transport stops for two minutes for Remembrance Day, where possible at 8 p.m. Near commemorations in The Hague, trams do not use bell signals and travel more slowly, transport operator HTM said. The carriers say that it depends on the traffic situation whether drivers can stand still.

Remembrance events are held at several train stations. This happens at Amsterdam Central Station, Alkmaar, Nijmegen, Rotterdam Central Station, Arnhem Central Station, Utrecht Central Station and The Hague Central Station. Two minutes of silence will also be observed in the station shops.

On May 3, NS and rail manager ProRail also commemorate the 477 rail employees who died during their work during the Second World War. There is a commemoration at the Monument for Fallen Railway Employees in the Moreelsepark in Utrecht. The management, employees and retirees of both rail companies are present.
