Troyes players threw fireworks back at their own supporters on Friday during the abandoned home match against Valenciennes (1-1). Supporters of the French second division were angry about the impending relegation, but the selection did not care about that.

Troyes needed a win against last-place Valenciennes to maintain some hope of survival in Ligue 2. The home team quickly took the lead through Simon Elisor, but was conceded a goal by Dutchman Nick Venema in the second half.

The Troyes fans decided to express their frustrations in the final phase by throwing fireworks and smoke bombs on the field twice. The supporters also chanted negative slogans about the City Football Group, which has owned the club since 2020.

Some players were not pleased with the behavior of the supporters. During the second interruption, the players threw the fireworks back into the stands. The referee decided to stop the match permanently. It is unknown if and when the remainder of the match will be played.

Troyes condemns fan behavior

Troyes condemned the behavior of the supporters in a statement. “The disappointment among the fans is no excuse for this behavior. We are now waiting for the decision of the football authorities.” The club will probably receive a hefty fine.

Number seventeen Troyes is seven points behind Dunkerque, which is in the safe sixteenth place. Ligue 2 has twenty clubs and the bottom four teams are relegated. Troyes will play two more league matches and probably the remainder against Valenciennes.

For Troyes it would mean the second relegation in a row. The club finished penultimate in Ligue 1 last season.
