Feyenoord has postponed the official PSV championship for a while. The Rotterdam team had to win at Go Ahead Eagles and they succeeded. In the Adelaarshorst the score was 1-3.

With that result, Feyenoord secured second place and a direct ticket to the Champions League.

While PSV already celebrated the unofficial national title after the resounding victory at SC Heerenveen (0-8), the Eindhoven team had to wait for the result in Deventer. At Feyenoord, the brand new winner of the KNVB Cup, goalkeeper Justin Bijlow returned to the starting line-up.

Bijlow has been sidelined for the past month and a half due to a calf injury and was replaced by Timon Wellenreuther until Sunday’s cup final against NEC, when Bijlow was already on the bench.

Coach Arne Slot had made room for Luka Ivanusec on the left wing and the Croat showed up in the first half. Lutsharel Geertruida set the ball up for Ivanusec and the latter rammed the ball onto the crossbar. The ball crossed the line via the back of goalkeeper Jeffrey de Lange (0-1).

An own goal by the goalkeeper. A little later, Ivanusec got the 0-2 after his name. After another nice attack, via Quinten Timber and Yankuba Minteh, the winger shot the ball hard and low into the far corner.

The Eagles did not let the deficit deter them and continued to look for attack. Bijlow made several saves and a slip by the goalkeeper, who promptly surrendered the ball, remained without consequences. The tying goal came just before half time.

Ueda secures victory

Bobby Adekanye crossed from the right and Oliver Edvardsen headed in (1-2). As a result, the question remained long after the break whether PSV’s national championship would become a reality. If it was 2-2, there would be cheering on the bus to Eindhoven.

However, the score was 1-3 in the 69th minute. After several missed chances, Ayase Ueda scored, who had replaced the not fully fit Santiago Gimenez just before the match. Substitute Calvin Stengs sent a nice through ball with the outside left and the Japanese striker finished between two Go Ahead defenders with the inside of his foot.

Three days after winning the KNVB Cup, Feyenoord was able to celebrate a modest party again. For the first time in thirty years, the currently reigning national champion secured a place among the top two in the Premier League in consecutive seasons.

The question now is whether the coach who was responsible for these performances will still be active for Feyenoord next season. Arne Slot is in the interest of Liverpool and the coach himself is keen on a transition to ‘The Reds’.
