The Netherlands will continue to supply soldiers to the NATO force in Lithuania until the end of 2026 to deter Russia. Minister Kajsa Ollongren informed the House of Representatives of this by letter. The maximum number of Dutch soldiers participating in the mission enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) remains 350.
There are currently approximately 270 to 300 Dutch soldiers in Lithuania. The purpose of the mission in the country is to show the population that NATO is ready. Ollongren “It is an important signal to our allies and Russia. Our soldiers make a crucial contribution to deterrence and defense here. Together we keep Europe safe.”
Second extension
The Netherlands has been participating in eFP since February 9, 2017. The contribution to the advanced NATO presence has already been extended in 2021. Now this is happening again, as the Russian threat has increased further.
In addition to the Netherlands, Germany (560 soldiers), Belgium (200 soldiers), Norway (140 soldiers) and the Czech Republic (36 soldiers) also contribute to the mission. For the Netherlands, the 13 Light Brigade and the 43 Mechanized Brigade of the Army Command are regularly active in Lithuania.
The Netherlands is discussing with Germany the possibility of contributing to a permanent German brigade in Lithuania.
