Erik ten Hag is still dream candidate number one to succeed John van ‘t Schip as trainer of Ajax, as is evident from an interview that Kelvin de Lang and Marijn Beuker gave to The Telegraph. If Ten Hag proves to be unfeasible, the club will look further at Graham Potter and a new name will emerge.

Ten Hag is having a bad season with Manchester United. The Haaksbergen-born coach is seventh with his club, was eliminated early in Europe and will therefore miss out on Champions League participation.

Yet the Dutch manager has reached the FA Cup final and there is something to be said for the high number of injuries in his squad. So there is a chance that he will stay at Manchester United.

If ten Hag is fired by the English club, Ajax would love to bring him back to Amsterdam. Beuker also reveals how long they want to wait for him. “The first training is scheduled for mid-June, so we want clarity at the end of May.”

If Ten Hag, who previously became Dutch champion three times with Ajax, is unwilling or unavailable, Ajax will transfer to Potter, with whom several discussions have already been held. Francesco Farioli, trainer of OGC Nice, also comes into the picture for the vacancy.

Ajax also had discussions with Xavi, according to the interview. The FC Barcelona coach was going to leave Catalonia after this season and was enthusiastic about Beuker and De Lang’s plan.

However, Xavi later reversed his decision to leave Barça and will serve out his contract until mid-2025. The chance that he will come to Ajax is virtually zero.
