Hedwiges Maduro will be the new head coach of Almere City from next season. According to The Telegraph The discussions between the current number twelve of the Eredivisie and Ajax are currently in the ‘final phase’. Maduro made the switch from Almere City to Ajax after last season. The former football player for Ajax, Sevilla and Valencia, among others, first worked in Flevoland as an assistant to Alex Pastoor, whom he will now succeed.

Football Internationalreporter Tim van Duijn reported earlier this Friday that Ajax and Almere City were negotiating a transfer of Maduro, but that some ‘bumps’ still had to be overcome. That seems to have happened now, because according to The Telegraph it is a matter of time before Maduro can call himself the new head coach of Almere City. He will therefore succeed Pastoor, with whom he wrote history last year by promoting to the Eredivisie with Almere City through the play-offs for the first time in history.

Maduro crowned his work in Flevoland with a transfer to Ajax, where he started working as assistant to Maurice Steijn. The latter was a strong supporter of the arrival of Maduro, but after his departure it soon became clear that both parties could no longer get along. Steijn resigned at the Johan Cruijff Arena at the end of October, after which Maduro was in charge in the away games against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Europa League and PSV. Ajax then appointed John van ‘t Schip as interim head coach, Maduro remained assistant.

Ajax saw another position within the club for Maduro, but he himself sees more in a position as head coach in the Eredivisie. So that will be Almere City. The PhD candidate is having an excellent first season in the Eredivisie. It currently finds itself in twelfth place. With three games to go, Almere City is not yet completely safe, but things have to go crazy for things to go wrong in the coming weeks.
