Jos Verstappen was present in Belgium this weekend during the Rally of Wallonia and for a long time Max Verstappen’s father seemed to be on his way to victory. However, things went wrong on Sunday and he was forced to abandon the battle from the leading position.

In 2022, Verstappen announced that he wanted to focus on rally racing and he would do so in the BRC. He also made a trip to the highest level, the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). It is, as it were, the second life of the man who cannot seem to let go of racing and so he has chosen this new adventure. The results and experiences in 2022 and 2023 have created such a positive feeling for Dutch people that they want more.

A good start

This year he is again active in the BRC and in the context of that competition, Verstappen senior rode the Rally of Wallonia last weekend. Together with teammate Renaud Jamoul, it all initially looked rosy after Saturday. The two gentlemen had an excellent start to the weekend and managed to build a nice lead of twelve seconds over Adrian Fernémont in the standings. A lead that shrunk to 6.5 seconds at the start of Sunday.

Big bad luck

However, the battle had to be stopped there due to a broken front suspension. It meant that Verstappen suddenly had a lead of 31.8 seconds over the new number two: Maxime Potty. Good papers, but on Sunday things also went wrong for Max Verstappen’s father. Due to bad luck, he and his teammate suffered two flat tires and were forced to end the weekend from the lead. So a downer. Ultimately, the overall victory went to Niels Reynvoet.
