Sjoerd Mossou, journalist and columnist of the Algemeen Dagblad, questions Francesco Farioli, who is mentioned as a candidate trainer of Ajax. The only 35-year-old Italian is currently making an excellent impression at the French OGC Nice, but in order to hold out in Amsterdam, other things are required of a trainer, Mossou outlines.

Last week it became clear that there are three more trainers on the candidate list in Amsterdam: former Ajax trainer Erik ten Hag, the Englishman Graham Potter and Farioli. The Italian is in his third job as a head coach in professional football in France, after previously leading the group with the Turkish Fatih Karagümrük and Alanyaspor. Ajax’s technical director Alex Kroes is said to have been drawn to Farioli’s performance during a visit to Manchester United, which has been partly owned by INEOS, the owner of Nice, since this year and became enthusiastic.

Although, according to various media, the Amsterdammers are still hoping for a return of Ten Hag and are in discussions with Potter again this week, Mossou understands why Farioli is also on the wish list. “He works at Nice OK, he seems to be a very interesting boy,” says the journalist AD Football podcast. Yet the Brabander also has his doubts: “Nice is a relatively small club in France when it comes to external pressure.”

And that is precisely what Farioli would face at the ever-restless Ajax: “Then he is a very young trainer, at a very difficult club and I am curious. Being a trainer is not only about football content, being a trainer is also your staff, your team and actually managing an entire club nowadays,” Mossou points out. “Whether he can do that, and in a country he doesn’t know with a language he doesn’t speak, remains to be seen. But: it would be an interesting experiment.”
