Arne Slot may be reunited at Liverpool with an old acquaintance from his period as coach of AZ. According to Italian media The Reds signed for a midfielder at Atalanta Bergamo, who managed to eliminate the English top club with his current employer in the quarter-finals of the Europa League earlier this season.

Slot and Koopmeiners worked together for a long time in Alkmaar, where the future Liverpool coach was first an assistant before he was appointed head coach in the summer of 2019. Under Slot, the midfielder made 58 appearances in a season and a half, scoring no fewer than 21 times and collecting seven assists. However, the collaboration suddenly came to an end in December 2020, when AZ fired the trainer after it became clear that he was in discussions with Feyenoord about a future employment contract, which would indeed happen.

Six months later, Koopmeiners also left the AFAS Stadium, albeit through the front door. Atalanta paid fourteen million euros for him, and to this day have not regretted it for a second. The 21-time Dutch international has now made 121 appearances for the Italian sub-topper, in which he scored 28 times and provided thirteen assists. For a long time, Juventus seemed to be going away with him next summer; Atalanta would have put a price tag of sixty million euros around the neck of the 26-year-old midfielder.

Sports media set writes, however, that the arrival of Koopmeiners could be ‘complicated’ The old lady, now that Liverpool would also be in the market. The Reds are said to have now inquired with Atalanta about the possibility of taking over the Dutchman. Koopmeiners is still in Bergamo until mid-2027.
