Feyenoord is certainly not the first Dutch team to play for the Eusébio Cup. Ten years ago Ajax faced Benfica. The team from Amsterdam came out on top (0-1) thanks to a goal from Ricardo Kishna. More than 25,000 people attended those matches. The last edition of the Eusébio Cup took place in 2022. Benfica then visited Newcastle United. The teams made it a great match. Benfica opened the scoring after fifteen minutes, but Newcastle United equalized seven minutes later. After a 2-2 halftime score, one more goal was scored in the second half: Henrique Pereira Araújo gave the home team the victory in the penultimate minute of regular time.

The Eusébio Cup always takes place at the end of July/beginning of August. According to 1908.nl This year too, the intention is that the competition will be scheduled around that period, i.e. after the European Championship in Germany. Feyenoord and Benfica also practiced against each other last summer. Coach Arne Slot’s formation won 2-1 thanks to goals from Igor Paixão and Santiago Giménez. Orkun Kökçü and Fredrik Aursnes had a starting place at Benfica. Kökçü transferred from Feyenoord to Benfica earlier that summer, while Aursnes had already made the switch to Lisbon a year earlier. Kökçü and Aursnes currently occupy second place in Portugal with Benfica, five points behind Sporting.
