Dutch opponent Austria cannot rely on the injured Xaver Schlager at the European Championship. The 26-year-old midfielder from RB Leipzig fell out of the Bundesliga match against Hoffenheim on Friday and tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Schlager was injured in the sixteenth minute of the Bundesliga match between RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim (1-1) on Friday. He left the field with tears in his eyes while hopping.

It is not the first time that the midfielder has torn a cruciate ligament. In 2021, the 43-time international also suffered a serious (cruciate ligament) injury.

For Austrian national coach Ralf Rangnick, the loss of Schlager is a big setback. He is seen as one of the basic players in midfield.

It was previously announced that Austria will have to make do without captain David Alaba. The 105-time international tore his cruciate ligament in December. Alaba would play his third European Championship in Germany.

The Netherlands will meet Austria in the third and final group match at the European Championships in Germany. The match will be played in Berlin on June 25 at 6 p.m. France and Poland are the other two group members of the Dutch team.
