PSV on course to trump Ajax from 1972 as the best champion ever | Football

Na 31 wedstrijden staat PSV op 84 punten. Het recordaantal van Ajax uit het seizoen 1971/1972 (93 punten) kan in de laatste drie speelrondes geëvenaard worden. Er moet dan drie keer worden gewonnen.

Als PSV inderdaad Sparta (thuis), Fortuna Sittard (uit) én RKC Waalwijk (thuis) verslaat, troeft de ploeg van coach Peter Bosz het succesvolle Ajax uit de jaren zeventig af op doelsaldo.

Ajax eindigde destijds met 104 doelpunten voor en 20 goals tegen op een doelsaldo van +84. PSV scoorde in de eerste 31 Eredivisie-wedstrijden van dit seizoen 103 keer en kreeg 17 treffers tegen, goed voor een doelsaldo van +86.

Er gloren meer primeurs voor PSV. Zo heeft de aanstaande kampioen het eigen doelpuntenrecord uit het successeizoen 1987/1988 (117 goals) nog in zicht. PSV heeft in de laatste drie wedstrijden wel een flink aantal doelpunten nodig om dat aantal minstens te evenaren: veertien.

PSV’s last national title dates back to 2018. The club secured the bowl in the 31st round thanks to a 3-0 victory over Ajax. Steven Bergwijn, who now plays for Ajax, was one of the goalscorers at the time.

From the current PSV selection, Luuk de Jong, Mauro Júnior, Armando Obispo and Hirving Lozano were also there. Captain De Jong also won the championship with PSV in 2015 and 2016 and finished top with FC Twente in 2010.

PSV’s championship match against Sparta Rotterdam starts on Sunday at 12.15 pm and will be led by referee Dennis Higler. Former goalkeeper Hans van Breukelen hands out the bowl when the title is won.
