Vincent Janssen received the fastest yellow card ever in the Jupiler Pro League on Sunday. The Dutchman was punished after just a few seconds in the 1-2 loss of Royal Antwerp’s league match against Club Brugge.

The 29-year-old Janssen immediately wanted to put pressure on Club Brugge after the first whistle, but he was hindered by opponent Raphael Onyedika. The striker was not pleased and dealt a blow to the Nigerian.

Janssen was shown a yellow card after just 3.5 seconds, setting a record. Never before has a player at the highest level in Belgium been punished so quickly. The previous record was held by RWDM player Abner, who was booked after eighteen seconds against Anderlecht last year.

“I was a bit excited,” Janssen said after the first half. “You want to start well right away. But I also know that this was not the best way. I was the first to be blocked. Then I wanted to give a block back, but I slipped. It was a bit too much. I let myself go a bit to go.”

Royal Antwerp lost due to an own goal by Toby Alderweireld and a goal by Andreas Skov Olsen. Michel-Ange Balikwisha scored from a penalty for the home team. The Antwerp team is no longer competing for the Belgian national title and is last in the champions group.

On Friday, Mark van Bommel announced that he would leave as coach of Royal Antwerp after this season. The Dutchman is linked to AC Milan.
